Pesticides

What are Pesticides?
A pesticide is any chemical that is used to kill pests.

Different kinds of Pesticides?
Pesticide formulations can come in different forms such as:
  • Sprays - Spray formulations are prepared for insecticides, herbicides, miticides, fungicides, algicides, growth regulators, disinfectants, and repellents. It is proven that more than 85% of all pesticides are applied as sprays.
  • Dusts - These have been the simplest formulations of pesticides.
  • Aerosols - Aerosols are effective and provide little or no residual effect as do conscientiously-applied sprays.
  • Fertilizer combinations - These are fairly common formulations to the home gardeners.
  • Granular pesticides - Granular pesticides defeat the disadvantages of dusts in their handling characteristics.
  • Fumigants - This is a chemical compound used in it's gaseous state to control pests.
  • Impregnating materials - These materials will only include treatment of woolens for timbers and mothproofing against wood-destroying organisms.
  • Baits - Baits are used as lures or traps for certain kinds of pests.
Hazards of Pesticides

Some pesticides are much more poisonous than others, and severe illness may result when only a small amount of a certain chemical has been ingested, while with other compounds no severe effects would result even after ingesting great quantities.

Some of factors that influence the poisonous state of pesticides are:

  • the concentration of the chemical
  • the toxicity of the chemical
  • length of exposure
  • the route of entry or absorption by the body
